Chianti is the hilly area between Florence and Siena, Arezzo, has always been considered ‘the heart of Tuscany; It is a succession of beautiful landscapes marked by dense vineyards, chestnut forests, oak trees, picturesque medieval villages, romantic castles and charming farmhouses. It is also the land where it produces one of the finest red wines in the world: Chianti.
The Chianti area it is the perfect place to travel through medieval villages, romantic vineyards and quaint hilly landscapes. In every small town you can run into cellars, castles and farms and taste the fine wine in one of the many wine bars. The origins, rich of a legendary story, and the wine-making tradition have made the Clante area (in Etruscan name of a stream) famous all over the world.
For those coming from Florence the natural gateway to the land of wines is Impruneta, rich in monuments, including the bell tower with battlements of the thirteenth century, the Basilica of Santa Maria and the adjacent Museum of the Treasury. The two international events: the grape festival with a parade of floats, and the fair of St. Luke, both take place in the fall.
Behind Florence to Siena, a must is the old medieval town of Greve in Chianti, with its ancient and distinctive triangular plaza bordered by buildings, porticoes and arcades, all converging towards the Church of Santa Croce.
The square hosts in September the most important shows in the Chianti wine. It dominates the city from the castle of Montefioralle old fortified village.
Then Volpaia, a picturesque medieval town built around a castle and ancient wine production center.
San Casciano’s territory was inhabited since Etruscan times, as evidenced by archaeological findings in Montefiridolfi (The Bowman’s Greve) and Valigondoli (Poggio La Croce’s excavations). In Roman times San Casciano was a post-stage (mansio) posted at the tenth mile from Florentia.
